Final Alternative Chapter of the book \u201cLogan\u2019s Choice\u201d<\/strong>

Logan phoned Alice Maclennan.
\u201cHi, Inspector,\u201d said Alice.
Logan put the cellphone on speaker and started to drive.
\u201cI\u2019ll be there in about twenty-five minutes. I need your help!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 5:40 p.m., Logan arrived at Alice\u2019s house.
\u201cHello, Mrs. Maclennan. Can you answer some questions?\u201d
\u201cOf course,\u201d said Alice.
Just as Logan was about to begin, Alice\u2019s cellphone rang.
\u201cExcuse me, Alice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logan stepped out of the living room and sat on the couch.
\u201cHello,\u201d said a voice.
\u201cWho are you?\u201d asked Logan.
\u201cI\u2019m Linda Maclennan, Alex Maclennan\u2019s cousin, and I hope I can help you.\u201d
\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d
\u201cYesterday I was deleting some messages and found a voicemail from Alex. I live in Argentina, so when he phoned me at night in Edinburgh, I was awake. But I was at a party and didn\u2019t answer, so he probably left me a voicemail. Today I finally had the courage to listen to it.\u201d
\u201cCan you send me the voicemail?\u201d
\u201cOf course,\u201d answered Linda.
\u201cYou\u2019ve really helped me. Thanks, Linda!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linda ended the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logan returned to the living room.
\u201cSorry, ma\u2019am, that was an important call. And now\u2026 we can hear the last words your husband said.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logan opened the voicemail, and Mr. Maclennan\u2019s voice echoed through the room:
\u201cHi, hi Linda, I need your help. I tried to call Alice but she didn\u2019t answer. I\u2019m dying\u2026 a man appeared in my bathroom and started to hurt me. I couldn\u2019t see his face because he was wearing a balaclava, but from his body it looks\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The voicemail stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alice started to cry.
\u201cMaybe if I had answered him, he could still be alive,\u201d said Alice between sobs.
\u201cIt\u2019s not your fault,\u201d said Logan, trying to comfort her.
\u201cNow I have an idea, and I need you. We can find the murderer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHi, brother. I\u2019m so sad, and I want you to go to the reading of the will. We\u2019ll know about the division of Alex\u2019s estate, and in the end, we\u2019ll hear a voicemail Alex sent to Linda saying who killed him.\u201d
\u201cHi Alice, this is Ian. I think you called the wrong number.\u201d
\u201cOh, sorry,\u201d said Alice. She hung up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGood acting,\u201d said Logan.
\u201cThank you.\u201d
\u201cNow you need to say the same thing to your brother, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 7:30 p.m., people started to arrive. Ross and Johnstone came early. Sergeant Grant installed a small camera in the corner of the projection room, where the voicemail would be played.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some minutes later, the reading began.
At first, it all seemed very normal: people crying, people hoping for money, and others just staying quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n

Logan and Grant were in their office, waiting for the person who would try to erase the voicemail. They didn\u2019t go to the room where the will was being read \u2014 they wanted people to think the mission had been completed. Tomorrow, they planned to arrest the murderer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 8 o\u2019clock, Logan and Grant saw only a black image on the camera feed. The murderer had probably broken the camera or covered it. Logan and Grant ran, trying to catch the murderer in the act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logan drove toward Albany Street, where the will reading was happening. But the police car broke down one block before. Logan and Grant abandoned the car and started to run. A few minutes later, they arrived at the projection booth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was too late.
Logan started to cry.
\u201cYou did all you could, don\u2019t feel bad,\u201d said Grant.
Logan and Grant returned to the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the office, Logan thought about who could be the murderer.
\u201cI think it was Ian. Alice only invited Johnstone, so Ian had no reason to go there unless it was to erase the voicemail. But I can\u2019t accuse him without proof,\u201d Logan said firmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He took a long sip of coffee.
\u201cI need another idea. I have to catch the murderer. I must.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logan reviewed all the cases she had solved before. Why was this one so difficult? She made two tables: one listing reasons Johnstone might have wanted Alex dead, and another for Ross. She spent the night working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you okay, ma\u2019am?\u201d asked Grant.
Logan woke up. \u201cOh, sorry, I fell asleep by accident.\u201d She laughed. \u201cI was working on this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grant looked at the notes. \u201cThat\u2019s good. Now we know some reasons Johnstone and Ross might have wanted Alex dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Logan still had no clear idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Linda phoned again.
\u201cHi Linda. Unfortunately, I still don\u2019t know who killed Alex.\u201d
\u201cI can imagine. I have to apologize. I was changing my cellphone, and my old phone didn\u2019t send the complete voicemail. I\u2019ll send it again.\u201d
\u201cSeriously? Thanks. You\u2019re helping me so much. I think it\u2019s you who will discover the murderer, not me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGrant! Come here!\u201d
Grant rushed over.
\u201cI\u2019m here, ma\u2019am. What do you need?\u201d
\u201cI have the complete audio.\u201d
\u201cAudio?\u201d asked Grant.
\u201cThe voicemail,\u201d answered Logan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logan played the new message:
\u201cHi, hi Linda, I need your help. I tried to call Alice but she didn\u2019t answer. I\u2019m dying\u2026 a man appeared in my bathroom and started to hurt me. I can\u2019t see his face, because he was wearing a balaclava, but from his body it looks like Johnstone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d said Logan. \u201cI really thought it was Ross\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logan phoned Alice.
\u201cHello ma\u2019am, I discovered the murderer\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 2 p.m., Logan and Grant drove to Johnstone\u2019s house. Three other police cars followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logan knocked on the door.
\u201cHi Logan, hi Grant.\u201d
\u201cWe don\u2019t have good news,\u201d said Grant, while handcuffing Johnstone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou discovered\u2026\u201d said Johnstone with a bitter smile.
\u201cWhy did you do this?\u201d asked one policeman.
\u201cI needed the money. Alex ignored my problems, and now Alice can help me. I saw that Logan thought Ian was the murderer. You would never have discovered it if Alex hadn\u2019t sent that voicemail. You\u2019re so stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They took Johnstone to his cell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have some news. Maybe you\u2019d like to meet me at Deacon Brodie\u2019s at 7:30 p.m\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
