When we&nbsp;<strong>know&nbsp;<\/strong>about the&nbsp;<strong>future&nbsp;<\/strong>we normally use the&nbsp;<strong>present tense<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We use the\u00a0<strong>present simple<\/strong>\u00a0for something\u00a0<strong>scheduled\u00a0<\/strong>or arranged:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We have&nbsp;<\/strong>a lesson&nbsp;next Monday.<br>The&nbsp;<strong>train arrives&nbsp;<\/strong>at&nbsp;6.30 in the morning.<br>The&nbsp;<strong>holidays start&nbsp;<\/strong>next week.<br>It&nbsp;<strong>is my birthday&nbsp;<\/strong>tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We can use the\u00a0<strong>present continuous<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0<strong>plans\u00a0<\/strong>or arrangements:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I\u2019m playing football&nbsp;<\/strong>tomorrow.<br><strong>They are coming&nbsp;<\/strong>to see us tomorrow.<br><strong>We\u2019re having&nbsp;<\/strong>a party at Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. We often use verbs like&nbsp;<strong><em>would like<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>plan<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>want<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>mean<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>hope<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>expect<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;to talk about the future:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are you going to do next year?&nbsp;<strong>I\u2019d like to go&nbsp;<\/strong>to University.<br><strong>We plan to go&nbsp;<\/strong>to France for our holidays.<br>George&nbsp;<strong>wants to buy&nbsp;<\/strong>a new car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. We use&nbsp;<strong>modals&nbsp;<em>may<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>might<\/em><\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong><em>could&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>when we are&nbsp;<strong>not sure&nbsp;<\/strong>about the future:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I might stay&nbsp;<\/strong>at home tonight, or&nbsp;<strong>I might go&nbsp;<\/strong>to the cinema.<br><strong>We could see&nbsp;<\/strong>Mary at the meeting. She sometimes goes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. We can use&nbsp;<strong><em>should&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>if we think something is&nbsp;<strong>likely to happen<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We should be&nbsp;<\/strong>home in time for tea.<br><strong>The game should be&nbsp;<\/strong>over by eight o\u2019clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7. Clauses with&nbsp;<strong>time words<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In clauses with time words like&nbsp;<em><strong>when<\/strong><\/em>,&nbsp;<em><strong>after<\/strong><\/em>, and&nbsp;<em><strong>until&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>we often use a&nbsp;<strong>present tense&nbsp;<\/strong>formto talk about the future:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll come home&nbsp;<strong>when I finish&nbsp;<\/strong>work.<br>You must wait here&nbsp;<strong>until your father comes<\/strong>.<br>They are coming&nbsp;<strong>after they have had&nbsp;<\/strong>dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>8. Clauses with&nbsp;<em><strong>if<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In clauses with&nbsp;<strong><em>if<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;we often use a&nbsp;<strong>present tense&nbsp;<\/strong>form to talk about the future:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We won\u2019t be able to go out&nbsp;<strong>if it rains<\/strong>.<br><strong>If Barcelona win&nbsp;<\/strong>tomorrow they will be champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WARNING<\/strong>: We do not normally use&nbsp;<strong><em>will&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>in clauses with&nbsp;<strong><em>if<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;or with<strong>&nbsp;time words<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll come home&nbsp;<strong>when I&nbsp;<\/strong><s>will<\/s><strong>&nbsp;finish work<\/strong>.<br>We won\u2019t be able to go out&nbsp;<strong>if it&nbsp;<\/strong><s>will rain<\/s><strong>&nbsp;rains<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But&nbsp;<\/strong>we can use&nbsp;<strong><em>will&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>if it means a promise or offer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will be very happy&nbsp;<strong>if you will come&nbsp;<\/strong>to my party.<br>We should finish the job early&nbsp;<strong>if George will help&nbsp;<\/strong>us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>9. We can use the&nbsp;<strong>future continuous&nbsp;<\/strong>instead of the present continuous or going to&nbsp;<strong>for emphasis&nbsp;<\/strong>when we are talking about plans, arrangements and intentions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They\u2019ll be coming&nbsp;<\/strong>to see us next week.<br><strong>I will be driving<\/strong>&nbsp;to work tomorrow.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
