That\u2019s what I say. I\u2019m guessing that\u2019s what you say, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m busy\u201d just rolls off our tongues. And you probably are busy. All of us have long to-do lists, which only seem to swell and swell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his book&nbsp;<em>Procrastinate on Purpose: 5 Permissions to Multiply Your Time<\/em>, Rory Vaden, bestselling author and co-founder of Southwestern Consulting, encourages us to stop talking about how busy we are. He used to do it all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/viaenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/i2641^pimgpsh_fullsize_distr-300x225-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-254\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he writes, \u201cYour problem is not that you are too busy; your problem is that you don\u2019t own your situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says that our lives are our responsibility. The commitments we have were either created or allowed by us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he further explains, \u201cYou are powerful enough to decide what you will and won\u2019t do with your time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;<em>,&nbsp;<\/em>Vaden dedicates a separate chapter to a different strategy and permission for making better use of our time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eliminate \u2014 the permission to ignore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Automate \u2014 the permission to invest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delegate \u2014 the permission of imperfect<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Procrastinate \u2014 the permission of incomplete<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Concentrate \u2014 the permission to protect<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of each chapter he lists valuable questions we can ask ourselves to help us make intentional decisions about our days. This way we aren\u2019t blurting out or swimming in a sea of \u201cI\u2019m busy\u201d statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, we\u2019re in charge. We\u2019re making choices about how to spend our time in this world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below you\u2019ll find these valuable questions, along with Vaden\u2019s other insights, to help you multiply your time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat are you currently saying yes to that is causing you to say no to your goals or your family?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/roryvaden.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vaden<\/a>&nbsp;encourages us to think about all the things we\u2019re doing that we don\u2019t need to be doing. For instance, we can start by stopping anything that doesn\u2019t require any warning, apology or explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" src=\"https:\/\/viaenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/i2643^pimgpsh_fullsize_distr-300x226-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-255\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Vaden, this might include watching TV, reading long emails, doing others\u2019 work and gossiping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Long emails usually warrant a phone call. For gossiping, Vaden likes Dave Ramsey\u2019s definition: \u201ccomplaining or talking badly about anything to anyone who can\u2019t directly do something about it.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The above question also highlights an important point: When we say yes to something we don\u2019t want to do, we take time away from what we do. We take time away from what makes us happy and fulfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key is in learning to say no, which is really tough for most of us. But it\u2019s not impossible. It involves learning a few strategies and practicing a lot. (You can learn more about saying no in this&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.psychcentral.com\/relationships-balance\/2012\/10\/01\/the-trick-to-saying-no\/\">piece<\/a>&nbsp;and this&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexandrafranzen.com\/2013\/02\/03\/how-to-say-no-to-everything-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat things are you doing over and over again that you could invest time or money into automating?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Vaden, \u201cthere are things all around your life and your business that should be automated.\u201d That is, there are things that you can improve or streamline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, whether you have a small or big business, you can invest time in creating a list of answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs). This saves you time in the long run of handling the same questions over and over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You also can automate your bills, so they\u2019re taken out automatically from your checking account. (Of course, the trick is to keep enough money in there.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can automate your chores, so you\u2019re not wasting time arguing about who\u2019s taking out the trash or washing the dishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basically, any time you have to do something over and over, you might want to find a way to automate it. According to Vaden, \u201cany time you can set up a system whereby someone can reduce the amount of \u2018think time\u2019 she has to spend to complete a regimented task, you will have created savings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat tasks are you hanging on to that you need to let go control of?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A big reason why we don\u2019t delegate is because we worry that someone else will make a mistake. (And we think it\u2019s easier if we just do it ourselves.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in the long run, this can save you lots of time. You can delegate tasks to people at work or at home. At work, you might hire anyone from a virtual assistant to a business coach to a bookkeeper to a graphic designer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At home, you might hire a house cleaner, gardener, mechanic or handyman. (As Vaden writes, \u201canyone who runs a household runs a business.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, if you have kids, Vaden says, you can always put them to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIn what areas of your life do you need to learn to be okay with things being just okay and to trust that time will help sort things out?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it\u2019s important to be patient. Sometimes, it\u2019s important to let yourself procrastinate today so you can create more time tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, according to Vaden, if you\u2019re not at least 75 percent sure of what the right decision is, don\u2019t make one. Wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He notes that time lets ideas incubate and relationships grow. It gives people the space to mature. And it lets our dreams adjust so they align with the true purpose of our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anything in our lives can wait. If you\u2019re having a heart-to-heart with a loved one, the phone call can wait.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/viaenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1_rKPxrWs08V0T68MhTj17eQ-300x300-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viaenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1_rKPxrWs08V0T68MhTj17eQ-300x300-1.png 300w, https:\/\/viaenglish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1_rKPxrWs08V0T68MhTj17eQ-300x300-1-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do you need to give yourself permission to concentrate on? How would concentrating on that create more opportunity for those around you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last permission is about protecting ourselves, and concentrating on your next most significant priority, Vaden writes. He notes that this may be a task that\u2019s moving you toward your greatest contribution or making the impact you\u2019d like to make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may be the thing that\u2019s helping you become your highest self in the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is really hard to do because we want to serve others, and we want their approval. So we let others\u2019 priorities take over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, as Vaden writes, \u201cYour highest obligation to other people is to be your highest self.\u201d And if you aren\u2019t your highest self, then you inhibit others from being their highest selves, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Multiplying our time isn\u2019t about doing things as quickly as possible.
